Former Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst is one of three additions to the Texas football staff designated as special assistants to Steve Sarkisian, similar to the role that former TCU coach Gary Patterson had with the Longhorns last year. Chryst will work with the Texas offense.
Texas needed to hire only one full-time assistant coach this offseason. However, Steve Sarkisian still found another way to beef up his coaching staff.
Veteran coaches Paul Chryst, Joe DeCamillis and Payam Saadat will join Texas as special assistants to the head coach, the American-Statesman confirmed over the weekend after initial reports from Orangebloods and 247Sports. Chryst, the former head coach of Wisconsin, will work with the offense; Saadat, who has been a defensive coordinator at the college level for the past 18 years, will work with the defense; and DeCamillis, a longtime NFL assistant, will help with special teams.
As of Sunday afternoon, both DeCamillis and Saadat already had been added to the UT staff directory.
DeCamillis spent more than three decades in the NFL and recently won a Super Bowl ring with the Los Angeles Rams. Saadat has been a defensive coordinator at Portland State (2018-22), Central Washington (2014-15), Army (2009-13) and Cal Poly (2006-08).
Chryst, 57, is the biggest name among the newcomers, though. He compiled an 86-45 record over 11 seasons as the head coach at Pitt and Wisconsin. He was fired by Wisconsin during the 2022 season.
Texas is coming off a season in which it benefitted from having an experienced coach working as a special assistant to Sarkisian. Last year, former TCU coach Gary Patterson held that title and was credited with helping the Longhorns make significant defensive strides under second-year coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski.
