The Indianapolis Colts tight end room is a bit of an enigma as we enter mandatory minicamp, but Kylen Granson has been one of the bright spots throughout the entire offseason workout program.
With so many pass-catchers missing time due to injuries this spring, Granson has stepped up in a big way. Entering a crucial Year 3, the former fourth-round pick has enjoyed what he’s put on the field thus far.
“I’m having a good spring. I’m having some fun out there. Going into year three, I feel like I’m taking more steps forward in my game and I’m seeing results. It’s just good to get back out there practicing again,” Granson told the media this week.
The SMU product isn’t the only player who feels he’s having a strong spring. His new head coach Shane Steichen did not shy away from praise during the early portion of OTAs.
Granson, who is competing for the H-back role, impressed his new head coach immediately.
“Gosh, he’s got great route-running ability. I’m really pleased where he’s at. He understands the game of football really well. He understands leverage, technique, all those different things – how to get himself open.” Steichen said May 25. “Really pleased with where he’s at and his route-running ability and also as a blocker.”
When it comes to working with a new head coach and offensive coordinator, there can be an adjustment period for certain positions, especially when a new offense is being installed.
However, Granson has enjoyed how involved the tight end position is in Steichen’s scheme.
“I think it’s definitely a little bit of both. Definitely utilizing our tight ends and utilizing all our skill positions,” Granson said. “I think Shane (Steichen) and Jim Bob (Cooter) have a really good plan for us as a team and I think it’s showing out there on the field.”
