James Robinson’s tenure in New England didn’t make it to the regular season.
The Patriots waived the running back, the team announced Monday, less than three months after signing him.
Robinson’s short tenure with New England began on March 17 with a reported two-year deal worth as much as $8 million. The 24-year-old had signed with the Patriots after he was traded to the New York Jets last season. Robinson joined New York after rookie sensation Breece Hall tore his ACL in the team’s Week 7 win against the Denver Broncos. However, he struggled in his short time with the Jets, averaging 21.3 rushing yards per game on 2.9 yards per carry in four games with the team. Robinson was inactive for New York’s final five games.

An undrafted free agent in 2020, Robinson burst onto the scene during his rookie season in Jacksonville, compiling 1,070 rushing yards, 76.4 rushing yards per game and 10 touchdowns – which are still his career highs – and setting the single-season record for most yards from scrimmage by an undrafted rookie.
The following season, the former Illinois State running back’s stats dwindled before he suffered a torn Achilles in a Week 16 loss to the Jets. Heading into the 2022-23 season, Robinson’s role with the Jaguars was reduced, as 2021 first-round pick Travis Etienne had emerged as the team’s starter by the midway point of the season.
Robinson was expected to add depth to the running back position for the upcoming season, along with Rhamondre Stevenson. If Robinson clears waivers, he will be a free agent on Wednesday.
