Louis Rees-Zammit wants to win the Super Bowl within the next five years and has described rugby as “a bubble” where “you can’t do certain things” following his switch to the National Football League.
Rees-Zammit is currently in the middle of a 10-week programme in Florida as part of the NFL’s international player pathway, with the Wales and British and Irish Lions winger hoping to impress in order to join a team in the NFL next season.
Speaking to the BBC, Rees-Zammit described his pursuit to be involved in the NFL as “alive” before adding: “In the next five years I want to be a Super Bowl champ.
“These are very much dreams but I’m desperate for these things to happen. And I want to be an inspiration for anyone coming through the IPP, and any international player that wants to get through to the NFL.”
The 23-year-old is currently training six days a week both on the training field and off it in the classroom to get up to speed, learning how to play as both a wide receiver and running back, before hoping to impress NFL scouts in March.
“Training is completely different. You’re using completely different muscles that you wouldn’t use in rugby. Even the soreness is different,” Rees-Zammit continued.
“I’d probably say the most challenging thing is how much you have to learn. The classroom stuff is full-on. I’m loving learning a completely different sport – the rules, the positions, special teams.”
Rees-Zammit stunned Gloucester and Wales supporters when it was announced on the eve of the Six Nations that he would be leaving the sport, but admitted that he could return to rugby if his dream of playing in the NFL does not work out, adding that he was “jealous” watching his former Wales team-mates face England at Twickenham and was “pretty gutted” that he could not play.
