Sports: Malakoff stars honored by state sports writers

Feb. 14—Malakoff placed several players off the Class 3A Championship team on the Blue Bell/Texas Sports Writers Association All-State Team, released on Tuesday.

Coach Jamie Driskell was named coach of the year for guiding the Tigers to a 16-0, perfect season.

Chauncey Hogg was a first team selection as a defensive back, while offensive standout Mason Logan was the second team center. Quarterback Mike Jones tied for third team recognition and Jerrion Hall was a third team running back.

Doc Renberg landed a spot on the third team as a defensive lineman and Josh Garcia picked up a third team nod as a utility player.

Canadian quarterback Camren Cavalier and Brock linebacker Cooper Massey were named the Blue Bell/Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 3A players of the year.

Cavalier passed for 3,951 yards with 59 touchdowns only three interceptions to grab offensive player of the year. He added 1,494 yards rushing with 24 more touchdowns for the 14-1 Wildcats.

Massey had 238 tackles, 40 of them for losses in leading his team to an 11-4 record to grab defensive honors.
