Seahawks’ big offseason thing: Patience with new head coach Mike Macdonald

Yahoo Sports’ Jason Fitz looks at the one big thing for Seattle’s offseason – after letting popular head coach Pete Carroll go, the Seahawks must give first-time NFL head coach Mike Macdonald room to grow.

JASON FITZ: It’s time to take a look at one big thing facing the Seattle Seahawks this offseason and that big thing is patience. Now I know I’ve said this with some other teams, but it’s patience in a different way. Pete Carroll had an identity that everybody immediately associated with the brand of the Seattle Seahawks. You could argue that Carroll was part of what made them relevant even to people that don’t care about the team one way or the other.

Carroll was a lightning rod and people paid attention to what he did. Now Mike Macdonald comes in as the new head coach and look, there’s no doubt that he’s qualified. There’s no doubt that his defenses in Baltimore showed why he’s a head coach, but also let’s acknowledge what we learned from players in Baltimore. They told you. It took a minute to figure that defense out. It took a second to figure out what he wanted and how he wanted to be done.

So now you have somebody that’s going to come in and learn as a first time head coach while they’re also going to continue to be the main voice in the defensive room so, right. You’ve got this coach that’s going to ask himself to simply add extra responsibility by becoming the head coach all while trying to replace a legend that has the personality of a legend. All of that requires an incredible confidence in who you are, an incredible security in how you do what you do, and incredible patience of hey, I’m going to do things my way.

And that means we may have to rip some things apart and it may take a second to rebuild, but in doing so they can shape themselves in the image of their new head coach. That is something, to me, that takes time and that is something, to me, that’s going to require something Seahawks fans aren’t used to. Possibly a team that’s…
