Jul. 4—LeROY — Camden Hungerholt pulled Todd Hoffner aside briefly last Saturday before they walked into a restaurant.
It was part of “Mav Day” at Minnesota State University, Mankato, a day for potential Mavericks football recruits to talk to coaches, see the program’s facilities and see the MSU campus.
Hungerholt and Hoffner were headed to a dinner with other potential recruits when Hungerholt quickly told Hoffner — the 13th-year Mavericks’ head football coach — that he was going to accept an offer to join MSU’s football program in the fall of 2025.
Hungerholt was equal parts ecstatic and relieved. So was Hoffner.
“It was really cool,” Hungerholt said. “I didn’t tell him until we got to the restaurant. He walked in and yelled ‘WE HAVE A MAVERICK!'”
With that, Hungerholt’s recruitment process was over, his college destination was set and the star quarterback/defensive back could take a deep breath and focus on the present — attempting to help LeRoy-Ostrander win a Section 1, 9-Player football championship this fall — before getting to his future.
Hungerholt attended a camp in Mankato in May, where he first got to know the team’s coaches.
“I loved their coaching staff,” Hungerholt said of the Minnesota State coaches. “The way coach Hoffner treated me when we met. Coach (Todd) Taylor (the defensive coordinator) and coach (Lavell) Jackson (the defensive backs coach), they were both big parts of my commitment.
“We had a d-backs meeting (after camp) and I loved coach Jackson, his energy and the way he treated us. And when I met with coach Hoffner, that sold me. He’ll tell you how it is, he shoots straight. I loved his personality.”
Hungerholt spent a lot of time in the car with his dad, Aaron, a LeRoy-Ostrander assistant coach, going from college camp to college camp this spring and summer. It was, at times, a…
