‘Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’ magazine up, down about Johnson County teams

Jul. 9—Summer is already half over, and football season is right around the corner. If you needed another reminder, “Dave Campbell’s Texas Football” magazine recently arrived on shelves.

This is the 65th edition of “Texas Football,” widely considered the “Bible of Texas Football.” This year’s edition features 400 pages of Texas football coverage — from the college to high school Class 1A — from front to cover, full of feature stories, preseason all-state teams, season and district previews, and much more.

The cover of this year’s issue focuses on the “Rivalry Reborn” between the Texas Longhorns and Texas A&M Aggies. Longhorn Quinn Ewers and Aggie Conner Weigman face off to showcase Texas’ move to the SEC, which reunites the famous rivals.

“Picking the cover is a privilege and a burden, but with the renewal of Texas’ iconic college football rivalry between Texas and A&M, it only felt right to feature the Aggies and Longhorns,” DCTF managing editor Greg Tepper said.

For the ninth straight year, the magazine features a second “gatefold” cover, and this one features “Family Business” with a father and son coaching duo. Katy coach Gary Joseph and his son, Port Neches-Groves coach Jeff Joseph. They were photographed at Rhodes Stadium, where dad coached son in his playing days.

One of the big highlights for Johnson County is the feature of former Cleburne Yellow Jacket Scotty Walden on the 40 Under 40. After leading Austin Peay to new heights, Walden landed in El Paso to serve as The University of Texas at El Paso. He hopes to turn his fiery personality into big wins, according to “DCTF.”

Walden, a 2008 Cleburne High School graduate, was an All-Johnson County quarterback for the Yellow Jackets in 2007.

Let’s take a look at what this year’s “Bible of Texas Football” has to say about our local teams here in Johnson County….
