Vanderbilt football coach Clark Lea had a hunch one NCAA rule could be changing when he made staff changes over the winter.
Sure enough, Lea was right. In June, it was announced that there would no longer be a restriction on the number of coaches who could participate in on-field instruction in college football, only on the number who could recruit off-campus.
Lea brought in former New Mexico State coach Jerry Kill in the offseason, and he said Monday at SEC Media Days in Dallas that he anticipated that those restrictions would be lifted. Some of the offseason hires were made with an eye toward helping Lea as he returned to the role of defensive coordinator in addition to being the head coach.
“We anticipated this just in the design of this staff,” Lea said. “So when you look at like the addition of Jerry Kill, we felt like he was going to be able to be a part of and wear a headset and be influential on. We also added Steve Gregory, who, Steve is someone I’ve worked with at Syracuse and have a lot of respect for, was secondary coach for the Lions, secondary coach for the Dolphins, who joins us as the associate defensive coordinator. He’s the guy that’s going to really help me and support me as I as I take on two roles.”
