Why Bru McCoy gets Hendon Hooker’s jersey number for Tennessee football in 2024

Tennessee football has released its roster for the 2024 season, which included changes to a few positions and dozens of jersey numbers.

Some are more notable than others.

Newcomers got their jersey numbers for games in the 2024 season after practicing with temporary digits in the spring. Veterans shifted to a preferred number.

Coach Josh Heupel, defensive lineman Omari Thomas, center Cooper Mays and linebacker Keenan Pili will appear at SEC Media Days in Dallas on Tuesday.

The updated roster was released on Monday. Here are the highlights.

Bru McCoy will wear Hendon Hooker’s No. 5

Wide receiver Bru McCoy will have an unfamiliar look when he suits up for his sixth season of college football, switching from jersey No. 15 to 5.

McCoy has long been a fan of former Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush, who wore No. 5 at Southern Cal. That’s why McCoy wore that number from his childhood to high school.

But No. 5 was unavailable to McCoy when he played at USC from 2019-21. And then quarterback Hendon Hooker and cornerback Kamal Hadden wore No. 5 during the past two seasons while McCoy donned No. 15.

But in his final season with the Vols, McCoy finally will get No. 5.

Squirrel White, other Vols switch to single-digit number

UT fans must also adjust to seeing Squirrel White in No. 3. The speedy receiver had worn No. 10 the past two seasons.

Last season, All-SEC punt returner Dee Williams had No. 3.

Switching to a single digit is a typical move for the fastest and smallest playmakers. White is 5-foot-10 and 167 pounds, and he’s among the Vols’ fastest players.
