The first official practice of Giants 2024 training camp is just eight days away, but rookies are already in the process of reporting on Tuesday, with veterans scheduled to do the same in one week.
One veteran who will surely be the center of attention during camp is quarterback Daniel Jones, who has said all along that he expects to be ready to go by the start of camp after tearing the ACL in his right knee last November.
Speaking with former Giants QB Phil Simms and his son Matt on a new episode of the “Simms Complete” podcast, Jones said that he has had “no real setbacks” as he prepares for a pivotal season in his Giants career.
“At this point,” Jones said, via The New York Post (the outlet previewed the episode before it was released), “I’m doing pretty much everything — running, cutting, everything I need to do.”
During OTAs and minicamp, the 27-year-old Jones was able to participate in seven-on-seven drills but was kept off the field during full 11-on-11 work. Still, the Duke product said in late May that he was “in a good spot” with his rehab.
“Just going to continue day-by-day with the process,” he said. “Obviously the goal is to be fully ready to go by the beginning of camp and I’m going to push to be ready as soon as possible. We have a good plan and I have a lot of trust and faith in our trainers and coaches.”
The 2024 season represents a fork in the road for Jones as he begins the second year of his four-year, $160 million contract extension. If he plays well and can bounce back to his 2022 form, it would go a long way towards establishing the former No. 6 overall pick as the Giants’ franchise quarterback.
If he plays poorly, though, this could be Jones’ final season with Big Blue, since there is a potential out in his contract that would save the Giants $19.4 million in 2025 cap space, while also creating over $22 million in dead cap money.
