Jets’ Aaron Rodgers discusses going to Egypt during ‘arbitrarily’ decided minicamp dates

Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers was a guest on the latest episode of the “Pardon My Take” podcast, and he told his side of the story about missing mandatory minicamp.

As reported by SNY NFL Insider Connor Hughes, Rodgers skipped the Jets’ two-day minicamp in June to go on a pre-planned trip to Egypt, which the veteran QB called “amazing.”

Per Hughes, the Jets were made aware of the trip when the official minicamp dates were announced, and while it was an unexcused absence, the team was not concerned, sources told SNY, that it will impact Rodgers’ season.

Rodgers said in his podcast appearance that he’s “sure he’ll get fined” for missing minicamp, though he took some exception with the way minicamp practices are designated in today’s NFL.

“The thing that people don’t understand is that when I was in the NFC North, playing for [the Packers] years ago, there used to be a real thing called minicamp, where you had one of them, and it was normally right after the draft,” Rodgers explained. “But anyway, it was usually five practices in three days. … Now, it’s not minicamp. Like, they can arbitrarily put a tag on whatever week of OTAs that they want, and say ‘This is the minicamp week,’ which somehow makes it more mandatory than the other weeks. But it was an OTA schedule.

“That’s how words can be a little deceiving from time to time. They can make a story out of the fact that I missed a minicamp, but it was really two OTA days. I came to the first 10.”

After a lengthy back-and-forth saga, Rodgers was traded to Jets prior to last season in a move that looked to instantly elevate New York to Super Bowl contenders. But the story is all too familiar to Jets fans at this point, as Rodgers tore his Achilles on just his fourth snap of the season, ending his first campaign in New York before he even completed a pass.

With Jets veterans set to report for training camp on Tuesday, it’s certain that Rodgers will be back in the spotlight as he hopes to stay on the field…
