Here’s how Missouri football may look to replace lost production at defensive tackle in camp

Three of Missouri football’s four main players at defensive tackle from last season will not return in 2024.

That presents a common question being asked of the Mizzou defense, which lost 10 players who were either starters or key role players to the NFL Draft or to eligibility.

Where are the Tigers going to turn to replace lost production?

With Jayden Jernigan, Realus George Jr. and Josh Landry all out of the picture, Missouri has secured two players out of the transfer portal who have high-level college reps to try and plug the gap, adding to an accomplished returner. After that, it appears it’s time for some high-level recruits from recent recruiting classes to take the next step.

Here is how Missouri’s defensive tackle room looks heading into fall camp. Every scholarship player and any notable walk-on is mentioned:

The options for Missouri football at defensive tackle

Starters: Kristian Williams, sr.; Chris McClellan, jr.

Reserves: Sterling Webb, jr.; Marquis Gracial, so.; Jalen Marshall, so.; Sam Williams, r-fr.; Justin Bodford, fr.

Kristian Williams is the clear and obvious starter among this group. He has spent two seasons with Mizzou after transferring from Oregon and has 10 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles in his time with the team.

After that, the picture gets a little more muddy.

Florida transfer Chris McClellan, who played 25 games in two seasons for the Gators, looks the most likely to take the next-most reps. Sterling Webb, a St. Louis native who started his career at New Mexico State, also looks likely to figure as part of the two-deep.

Four-star recruit Marquis Gracial and three-star prospect Jalen Marshall were both members of Missouri’s Class of 2022, but have had limited playing time since joining the Tigers. That could be due for an uptick this season.
