Lincoln Riley indicates he would ditch Notre Dame-USC game if need be

The idea of the Notre Dame-USC rivalry being less than it is is becoming as tired as that of the Irish joining a conference. Most of this discussion comes from fans on social media and sports media talking heads. But that dialogue entered a new level during the Trojans’ first appearance Big Ten Media Days.

Trojans coach Lincoln Riley took the podium and was asked about the future of his team’s rivalry with the Irish. What left his mouth was disgusting but also not surprising:

Asked Lincoln Riley if he hopes to keep the Notre Dame game now that USC is in the Big Ten:

“I would love to. I know it means a lot to a lot of people. The purist in you, no doubt. Now if you get in a position where you got to make a decision on what’s best for SC to help us win… pic.twitter.com/CyedsqoR6P

So now, we’ve got a Trojans coach who apparently doesn’t understand what the best intersectional rivalry in college football truly means. Any coach for either team who says they would sacrifice the rivalry in the name of moving college football forward should be working elsewhere.

This is not to say Riley should be fired for saying this, but he needs to take some time to read up on history and why this idea is ludicrous. Then and only then can he approach his team’s annual game with the Irish with the pomp and circumstance it deserves.
