Penn State coach James Franklin mentions Notre Dame in round table

The big question for every program expected to be highly ranked is how to gain the best possible position for the College Football Playoff. For every national championship contender not named Notre Dame, the best way to do that is to win your conference title game and obtain one of the four first-round byes in the 12-team bracket.

During Big Ten Media Days, Penn State coach James Franklin was asked about this topic. In providing his answer, he found a way to work in the Irish:

“I’ve seen so many things about Notre Dame not having a bye as part of their requirements with the playoff. They do have a bye. They don’t have a conference championship game. That’s their bye.”

James Franklin was asked about the idea that Penn State could be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the CFP expanding to 12 teams.

This answer went to some interesting places. You don’t normally hear a coach talk about another team like Franklin does about Notre Dame here. pic.twitter.com/LFg9PBXzMe

Franklin isn’t wrong here. Even though the Irish can’t be seeded higher than fifth, the tradeoff is getting a week to rest while other teams are battling to have a bye the following week. Nice way to balance the universe perhaps.
