Florida football RB Montrell Johnson Jr. week-to-week after suffering knee injury in camp

Florida football running back Montrell Johnson Jr. suffered a knee injury during the first week of fall practice, a source confirmed to the Gainesville Sun on Saturday,

Johnson is going to have the knee scoped and is considered week to week for fall camp. The Florida Gators are four weeks out from their season opener on Aug. 31 against Miami.

The 5-foot-11, 215-pound Johnson is Florida’s leading returning rusher, having gained 817 yards on 5.4 yards per carry and 5 TDs. This season, Johnson was expected to take on more carries with former UF running back Trevor Etienne’s decision to transfer to Georgia.

Overall, Johnson has gained 1,658 yards and scored 17 TDs (15 rushing, two receiving) for Florida since transferring from Louisiana to Florida to play for head coach Billy Napier. He was named preseason All-SEC first team and second team by various publications,

Florida’s depth behind Johnson at running back includes sophomore Treyaun Webb (26 carries, 163 yards, 2 TDs), JUCO transfer Ja’Kobi Jackson and true freshman Jadan Baugh, who impressed in UF’s spring game, rushing for a game-high 77 yards on 6.4 yards per carry. Tulane running back transfer Cam Carroll also is back practicing with the Gators after sitting out the entire 2023 season with a torn ACL.
