The Ohio State football team has lost out on a star safety that could’ve been transformative for its class of 2025. Trey McNutt, who is from Ohio, has committed to Big Ten foe Oregon.
On3’s Hayes Fawcett was the one who helped break the news of McNutt’s commitment via “X.”
McNutt’s father, Richard McNutt, played in the secondary for the Buckeyes from 1999-2002. Ohio State made an early move to snag the defensive back as they offered him in April of 2023, but it wasn’t enough.
McNutt is a 6-foot safety who is the second-best player from the state of Ohio and the best safety in the Class of 2025 per 247Sports. He is ranked 23rd nationally.
The Buckeyes were in the mix along with Texas A&M, Florida, and USC. Both Tim Walton and Gerren DuHart were among those who recruited McNutt.
From Cleveland, McNutt’s absence is going to be a blow for the Buckeyes. However, that is softened by locking in commits from the top prospect in the state, Tavien St. Clair, and the third- and fifth-best prospects from Ohio as well. Ohio State also has some fantastic defensive backs that have committed the last couple of years.
Ohio State football, which has had some of college football’s best defensive backs over the last few years including Marshon Lattimore and Denzel Ward, have four-star Maryland safety commit Faheem Delane set to join the roster next season.
The Buckeyes should be in good hands, but this is obviously a discouraging development.
