Observations from Cincinnati Bearcats football practice at Higher Ground

As he climbs to his command post, a wooden tower with a birds-eye view of two artificial turf fields, University of Cincinnati Associate AD/Football Operations John Widecan is in his 26th year of watching Bearcats practice August football away from the cranes and concrete of Corryville.

Though it’s not much over a half-hour from campus, the Higher Ground Conference and Retreat Center in West Harrison, Indiana offers a green getaway and a steady diet of football for a couple of weeks each season.

This summer is the 26th training camp the Cincinnati Bearcats have held at Higher Ground in West Harrison, Indiana

The facilities have improved immensely since Rick Minter brought his crew in 1999 to hard, grass fields, mosquitoes and a hike to the mess hall. UC just replaced one of the turfed fields and over the years dorms have been added along with a massive dining structure, complete with Cracker Barrel-like rocking chairs outside.

The Bearcats also transport their weights, so there’s little idle time.

Coaches enjoy the wide open focus Higher Ground brings. When Brian Kelly was hired, he wasn’t sold on taking his team off campus, until he tried it and saw the bonding process. He enjoyed it so much that he took a run at acquiring it for Notre Dame when he was there.

Scott Satterfield is now the seventh Cincinnati Bearcat coach to use Higher Ground.

Cincinnati Bearcats head coach Scott Satterfield is amused by a question at Camp Higher Ground. This is his second experience at the training facility.

“Ir’s one of the most unique training camps in all of college football,” Satterfield said. “To be able to come out here and escape all distractions and you’ve got the guys. We’ve got a lot of new players. There were a lot of smiles when they got off the bus to come in and eat the first meal.”

Appetites are worked up on the dueling…
