ANN ARBOR, Mich. — After coming out of spring ball a bit decimated at the position, Michigan football bolstered its wide receiving corps by adding two players via the transfer portal — one unfamiliar and one very familiar.

The unfamiliar one was Youngstown State transfer C.J. Charleston. Last year, the Ohio native had 33 catches for 503 yards and four touchdowns, and he’s played against Big Ten-level competition throughout his career. He played against Ohio State last season and had one catch for seven yards, but played against Michigan State in 2021 and had three catches for 18 yards. Twice in his career (which started in 2019), he’s eclipsed 100 yards receiving, so he knows what it’s like to take a game over.

His compatriot and leader in the Michigan wide receiving room, junior Tyler Morris, says that Charleston may still be getting acclimated to the locker room and what it takes to be a Wolverine, but he’s shown a lot of prowess on the practice field.

“He’s definitely gonna play for us this year,” Morris said. “He’s made some real good plays this year. And, obviously, being a newer guy, you might watch him a little more, just to kind of see what we’re getting from him. And I’m confident in him.

“He’s smart. He’s an older guy, so he kind of knows how college football works. So he’s picking up on things fast. He’s making plays, he’s definitely somebody that, as fall camp is going through — like I’m confident in him. I think he’s definitely gonna be out there to make plays for us.”

The other addition is a familiar face in Amorion Walker, who transferred back to Michigan after spending spring ball at Ole Miss.

Walker was originally recruited as a wide receiver as part of the 2022 class, the same class that Morris was in. But in 2023, he was moved to defense, moonlighting at cornerback with the idea…
