Five-star freshman linebacker Sammy Brown was named the 2024 USA TODAY HSSA National Defensive Football Player of the Year on Wednesday.

Brown, a 6-foot-2, 238-pound recruit out of Jefferson, Ga., committed to Clemson in June 2023 over Georgia and Ohio State. He was the nation’s top linebacker in the class of 2024 and the No. 5 overall player at the time of his commitment.

Brown went on to take home the 2023 High School Butkus Award, presented annually to the nation’s top linebacker. He led Jefferson to a Class 5A-Region 8 championship and a 13-1 overall record last season, registering 153 tackles (80 solo), 12 tackles for loss, one sack, two interceptions, a pass breakup and three blocked punts on defense/special teams in his senior season.

On offense, he ran for 2,289 yards and 41 total touchdowns. Brown was an early enrollee at Clemson back in January and appeared in the Tigers’ annual Orange vs. White Spring Game. He had eight tackles (six solo) and a sack on the first drive of the game.
