Texas Tech football’s Dylan Spencer to miss season with knee injury

Texas Tech football defensive end Dylan Spencer will miss the season because of a knee injury, coach Joey McGuire said Saturday, the first major injury the Red Raiders have suffered since preseason practice started on July 31.

Spencer’s a 6-foot-5, 245-pound sophomore from Houston King. Coming out of spring practice, he was the top backup on the depth chart to returning starter Joseph Adedire at boundary end.

Spencer played in eight games last year as a true freshman, so he can use his regular redshirt season this year. The former unanimous state top-100 recruit was credited with four tackles last season.

McGuire said Spencer suffered the injury in non-contact work the first or second day of practice. That’s during the NCAA-mandated acclimation period before players can put on pads.

McGuire and defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter said early last season Spencer was exceptionally tough and physical for a freshman, citing that as a key reason they decided not to redshirt him coming in out of high school.

The Red Raiders had their first full scrimmage of the preseason Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium. It was closed to the public and media, but McGuire briefed reporters afterward.

Among those who did not scrimmage were defensive ends Amier Washington (groin) and Adedire (ankle), defensive tackle Trevon McAlpine (ankle), inside linebacker Bryce Ramirez (hamstring), offensive tackle Jaxon Hughes and running back Cameron Dickey (ankle). None are expected to miss lengthy time periods, and Ramirez said Adedire and Hughes should be back for Monday’s workout.
