Tennessee high school football is a little less than a week from officially being a reality.
To whet fans’ palate for Friday night lights and prepare teams for competition, Knoxville County teams played in the KOC Kick-Off Classic. The two-day jamboree at Karns and Gibbs gave a peek of what’s to come in the 2024 TSSAA football season.
Here are four observations from the action.
Shavar Young and Knoxville Webb’s devastating secondary
The Spartans’ secondary looks to be the best in the Knoxville area and one that could compete with some of the top teams in the state.
They forced two interceptions in their quarter against Carter, including one by junior Greg Tate III, who has offers from Eastern Kentucky, Marshall and Toledo. Senior Hal Niendorff, who has offers from New Mexico State and Colgate, is another prolific defensive back who had three interceptions last season.
Webb’s most lethal cornerback is Shavar Young, a four-star Clemson commit. The 6-foot, 180-pound junior moved with a different fluidity than his counterparts. His dynamic moves on offense was also on display when he was in as a receiver and snagged a 40-yard touchdown pass.
Bearden stars missing
Bearden was down a few All-Region 2-6A players from last season in its 12-minute game against Powell. Junior running back Jayzon Thompson, senior linebacker Kai Ironside and junior wide receiver Tory Beaufort were all sidelined.
Coach Josh Jones said their absence wasn’t due to any serious injuries.
“If we were playing in a real game, they would all play,” Jones said. “They’re good, it was all precaution. As they say, we got to get our horses through the race and we’re just being cautious with those guys.”
All three are expected to play Week 1 in the Bulldogs’ home game against West, Jones said.
