Three players out and other takeaways before second Florida football scrimmage

Florida football held its second spring scrimmage on Saturday at The Swamp before about 200 family members and boosters.

The Florida Gators are winding down fall camp, which will end with three practices next week before the start of the fall semester on Thursday.

Florida will open its season at The Swamp on Aug. 31 against state rival Miami (3:30 p.m., ABC).

Florida is looking to bounce back from a 5-7 season and missing a bowl for the first time since 2017. Overall, UF is 11-14 in two seasons under Napier and looking to surprise some people after being picked to finish 12th out 16 teams in the SEC in the conference’s preseason media poll.

“It’s disrespect,” Florida linebacker Shemar James said. “We’re the University of Florida, a national brand. We see that as disrespect. But we can only prove ourselves right. It’s not about the naysayers. It’s about what we can put on that field and put on film and show.”

Here are three takeaways from the open portion of workouts before Saturday’s scrimmage:

Wide receiver Ja’Quavion Fraziars and defensive back Aaron Gates were in black non-contact jerseys before Saturday’s scrimmage. Fraziars, on crutches on the sidelines, did not take part in Saturday’s scrimmage. Gates went through pre-game stretching before going to the sidelines with trainers.

Moore was not at the scrimmage after sitting out Friday’s practice. He missed practices earlier in camp due to a bout with an abscessed tonsil.

Tight end Tony Livingston went through passing drills in a non-contact jersey and offensive lineman Bryce Lovett was back as a full participant after missing the last three practice.
