Wisconsin DB Amare Snowden leans on football family following mother’s death

MADISON – While Amare Snowden has been working his way up the depth chart, the Wisconsin redshirt freshman defensive back has been dealing with a tragic loss.

Snowden revealed on an X post Friday night that his mother died last week.

He wrote:

“Last Wednesday my mother depressingly passed away it’s been hard to focus on football but Coach Fickell and Coach Haynes have guided me and helped me throughout this grieving process. I love you mama”

Snowden went through Wisconsin’s 16th fall camp practice Saturday. At 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, Snowden is a unique prospect who has been trying to play his way into the Badgers’ top rotation of cornerbacks.

He has intercepted two passes in camp and worked mostly in the second rotation of defensive backs.

“I try to put myself in his shoes and I don’t know how I would handle it and he’s been really solid,” UW coach Luke Fickell said after practice Saturday. “When you know a kid you can see the ups and the downs and it’s not always by performance. It has a lot to do with body language and facial expressions, but he has done an unbelievable job.”

Fickell knows Snowden’s family well.

Snowden committed to Cincinnati when Fickell was its head coach. When Fickell came to UW, Snowden decommitted from the Bearcats and gave up the chance to also play college baseball to commit to the Badgers.
