Duke football coach Manny Diaz provides update on Blue Devils’ quarterback competition

Manny Diaz was inside his Duke football office when Saturday night turned into Sunday morning.

Less than two weeks from the Blue Devils’ season opener on Aug. 30 against Elon at Wallace Wade Stadium, Diaz was watching film after Duke wrapped up its debut training camp under their first-year coach in Durham.

Now, it’s time for Diaz and his staff to complete Duke’s depth chart. Quarterback is at the center of that discussion, with Texas transfer Maalik Murphy and sophomore Grayson Loftis battling to be the starter.

A question regarding Diaz’s assessment of the quarterback competition led off a 13-minute Zoom press conference on Sunday afternoon with media members.

“We had our second scrimmage (Saturday), really pretty much closing down training camp. I think Maalik, Grayson both continue to play at a high level, getting better and better,” Diaz said.

“I think the other really encouraging thing is Henry Belin is starting the throw the ball really well again. … I didn’t leave the building until 1 a.m. (Sunday morning), grading it after (practice) got done.”

Diaz isn’t ready to name a starting quarterback, but he went on to say the staff will begin the process of building out a depth chart early this week in preparation for the Phoenix.

“I think at some positions, we would be ready to potentially begin the week with a starter,” Diaz said.

“I think other positions, we know who’s above the line and, really, we’re just battling for snaps. With quarterback in particular, if we felt like we had the guy, we would probably go with that.”
