Langston football offensive coordinator Darryl Mason dies at age 63

The Langston football team is mourning the death of offensive coordinator/assistant head coach Darryl Mason, who passed away Saturday at age 63.

Mason was born in Hope, Arkansas, on Oct. 27, 1960. He played tight end for Arkansas from 1978-81 and had a brief career in the USFL from 1983-86.

Mason began his coaching career at Minnesota in 1984 while still playing in the USFL. He served as an offensive coordinator for programs such as Arkansas Baptist College, Northwestern State and Cheyney before he joined Langston, an NAIA program, in 2013.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of the great Coach Mason,” Langston coach Quinton Morgan posted on X. “A man of unwavering integrity and a true lover of the game, his passion for football was unmatched. My prayers go out to his family and to our entire football family during this difficult time.”

Today we lost a good man and I lost a friend. Darryl Mason loved coaching because he truly loved helping people. His passion and unique style of coaching made an impact on many. His players were lucky to be coached by him and his friends were lucky to know him. RIP Coach. pic.twitter.com/Pyp9bp8GAP
