GAMEFACE 2024: Abington Heights Comets

Cayd Sespico doesn’t remember too clearly losing an entire season when Abington Heights cancelled football in 2020 as a protective measure during the COVID-19 pandemic.

But he has played a big part in the football program’s resurrection.

Sespico, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound tight end/defensive end, is a returning Lackawanna Football Conference Division I all-star who is ready for the Comets to soar back to a championship level in his junior season.

“I have learned a lot about football,” Sespico said. “It was a smart decision for me to play football. Last season, Sespico had an impact on both sides of the ball.

As a blocker, he uses his strength and outstanding technique to pave the way for a running game that had 1,333 yards on 294 attempts in 2023. He also caught 17 passes for 296 yards and three touchdowns.

Defensively, Sespico excelled in the second half of the season and finished with 49 total tackles, four for losses, and two sacks. He had a season-high seven tackles against Scranton in the regular season, then five in a 14-6 win over the Knights in the semifinals of the District 2 Class 5A playoffs.

Sespico is one of seven starters returning on offense and one of eight back on defense, and the Comets will start the season with optimism after a 7-5 overall record and a loss in the District 2 Class 5A championship game against Delaware Valley.

“It is going to take a lot of hard work this season,” Sespico said. “Last year was a good year, and I am proud of that. It was a growth year for the program. But this year we have to come back and play as a team, and it…
