There is no greater reward for commitment than victory.
On a late October night last season, Montrose players found out.
In their final game, the Meteors posted a 40-0 win over Holy Redeemer. For a program that endures uncertainty that it can continue at the varsity level because of a decline in the number of players on the roster, the win gave those willing to stick with it something to build off.
That’s all Nate Thurman has thought about as he put in his offseason work, which includes encouraging classmates to come out for the team.
Once again, the Meteors have a new head coach. George Petrak is the ninth coach for the program since Tom Lucenti resigned in 2005. Lucenti won 110 games in 19 seasons.,
Montrose finished 1-7 last season as an independent and has a record of 17-119 since 2008.
That, however, is in the past. This group is encouraged and excited for another opportunity to compete.
“It is a lot of adversity to deal with every year not knowing if we are going to have a team every year,” Thurman said. “Our new coaches have been great and giving us encouragement. We have been at the field working hard and we have a lot of guys at practice. There are a lot more guys than I have seen in my years here.
“We just have a love for the game. We want to keep this going and when you have that love to play, you just want to maintain hope that we will get a chance.”
Thurman is one of several players who started last season. He is moving to tight end and defensive tackle.
Quarterback Hudson Aukema is a veteran. He’s started for three seasons. He had two rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown in the win over Holy Redeemer.
Jamier Robinson is a returning starter at wide receiver and cornerback. He scored three touchdowns against Holy Redeemer in the regular-season finale. He used his speed to score on a 26-yard run and a 21-yard…
