It is a well-known fact Riverside coach Harry Armstrong likes to spread the ball around, play at a fast tempo and make sure his athletes are having fun.
Since making his return to the sidelines at his alma mater, which he guided to PIAA Class 1A finals as a quarterback and a coach, the cagey mentor has made sure his program is relevant and exciting.
With another stable of playmakers and headliners, the Vikings intend to add an exclamation to the season with the program’s first championship since 2015.
“We have a lot of energy,” Riverside senior wide receiver JJ Rogers said. “We have some returning starters, but we also have some young guys who are really stepping up.”
Even before the season got into heat acclimatization in early August, Riverside star players were grabbing headlines.
NCAA Division I colleges are flooding two-way lineman Tavian Branch’s inbox with offers. All-Region linebacker Richie Kostoff has offers, too. Quarterback Chase Taddonio is closing in on joining an exclusive club for passing yards.
The Vikings are coming off a season where they reached the District 2 Class 2A championship game and gave District 2 Class 1A champion Lackawanna Trail its closest game in the Lackawanna Football Conference.
Rogers is a big part of the excitement.
He emerged as a big-play threat last season in Riverside’s sophisticated and wide-open offensive attack. Record-setting receiver Reese Gaughan graduated and is at Susquehanna University. Rogers finished third on the team with 24 receptions for 418 yards and five touchdowns last season.
He three receptions for 67 yards and a touchdown in a 28-21 loss to Lackawanna Trail. In a win over Triboro rival Old Forge, he hauled in two passes for 85 yards and a touchdown, and he had his team’s lone touchdown on a 36-yard catch against Dunmore in a 13-7 loss in the District 2 Class 2A…
