Texas Longhorn fan ranks the SEC Helmets

The helmet is the visual identity of a football team. Some teams in the NFL, like the Cowboys, Steelers, Packers, 49ers and Raiders, to name a few, have had the same helmets for decades.

The same goes in college football. When you think of Michigan, you think of the gold wings. When you think of USC you think of the Trojan. Notre Dame and Penn State? You think of a plain canvas of gold and white respectively.

I love helmets. I have autographed helmets all over my house. As a Texas fan, I’m very proud of the Longhorns helmet. It is iconic. That’s a fact. I’ve also covered all of college football for a long time. I have strong opinions on what makes a good helmet, what makes a boring helmet and what makes a weird helmet.

I love traditional helmets. Helmets that are instantly recognizable. Helmets that are classic and iconic. I like newer helmets that look cool. Even new helmets can be its own tradition, like in Oregon.

Now that the Horns are moving to the SEC, let’s rank the helmets in the “new” league as a lifelong Longhorns fan and longtime member of the college football media.

Simple. Classic. Instantly recognizable. Unique. Alabama’s helmet defines iconic. No need for fancy gimmicks or flashy logos. All you need is the player number. Bama’s helmet oozes college football tradition.
