This big change is giving Jackson State football coach T.C. Taylor a good feeling about 2024

Jackson State football is four weeks into summer camp, and Tigers coach T.C. Taylor likes the effort and execution of the 104 players on his team. In his second season, Taylor is more comfortable than in his first year.

Taylor had a lot of adversity as he took over the team after the 2022 season. He had to replace an entire coaching staff and almost 60 players. Despite the chaotic circumstances, Jackson State finished the season 7-4 and tied for second in the Southwestern Athletic Conference East Division.

Taylor said he started feeling comfortable at this year’s Southwestern Athletic Conference Media Day. Another reason, he says, is that he has surrounded himself with the right people.

In the offseason, Taylor hired six new coaches, and several have played in the NFL or Canadian Football League experience.

“There was a lot of turnover after the first year,” Taylor told reporters Aug. 12 in his first comments since preseason practice started July 29, shared on a video released Tuesday on YouTube by Jackson State. “This time I had time to go out and get the right players and I hired six new coaches in the offseason. I wanted to bring in the people that shared my vision, and I wanted to get coaches that would bring a lot of energy and knowledge to the game.”

Taylor hired former NFL player Manny Ramirez as the run game coordinator and offensive line coach. Ramirez played nine NFL seasons with the Detroit Lions and Denver Broncos.

“Coach Manny Ramirez with the offensive line, he’s a great teacher,” Taylor said. “I love to go and sit in his meetings because the things he is relating to those guys, it translates well to the football field for the O-line.”
