18 Mitchell-area prep football players to watch in 2024

Aug. 20—MITCHELL — A new season of South Dakota high school football is just days away, and once again, the Mitchell area is flush with gridiron talent.

From Winner to Canistota and many stops in between, those abilities will soon be on full display as teams across the state begin yet another march toward the DakotaDome. This week marks the start of play for Class 11B and the nine-man classes, with Classes 11AAA, 11AA and 11A to follow next week.

As teams prepare to take the field for the first time in 2024, here’s a look at 15 of the top playmakers poised to make an impact this fall, listed in alphabetical order by last name:

Waylon Bolle, jr., RB/LB, Corsica-Stickney: Though individual statistics from 2023 were not available, look no further than a freshman campaign that included more than 1,500 total yards and 22 touchdowns on offense along with 55 tackles (7.5 for loss) on defense as evidence for Bolle’s two-way playmaking abilities. To keep defenses guessing, Corsica-Stickney also has the benefit of having Bolle in the formation alongside fellow veteran playmaker Tate Tolsma, who appears later on this list.

Parker Denne, sr., RB/LB, Mitchell: One of just two returning offensive starters for the Kernels, Denne will once again be looked to to carry the load for the black and gold. Denne amassed more than 1,000 all-purpose yards with eight touchdowns in 2023, ranking as Mitchell’s top rusher and No. 2 receiver at season’s end. A two-way starter, Denne is also the Kernels’ No. 3 returning tackler from last season.

Shawn Hammerbeck, sr., TE/DE, Winner: A 6-foot-7, 260-pound force along the line of scrimmage, Hammerbeck tied for the team lead with 36 tackles and paced the Warriors in sacks on the way to a Class 11B all-state selection last season.
