How will Kansas State football’s depth chart look to open the 2024 season? Our predictions

MANHATTAN — Kansas State football associate head coach Matt Wells, who joined Chris Klieman’s staff at the end of last season, was asked earlier this week to assess the Wildcats’ roster heading into the 2024 season.

His answer was simple.

“I think we’ve got a lot of depth,” said Wells, who also serves as the Wildcats’ co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. “I see a team that’s go really good depth compared to some Big 12 teams that I’ve been around the last five years.

“And man, we’ve got some good areas of competitive depth and some competitive battles that I think they’re important for each guy to kind of raise his level and continue to improve because of that depth. And I think hopefully that’ll show up in October and November when you have some injuries or something like that, to need that depth to show up.”

Wells was hired by his old friend Chris Klieman at the end of last season after two years as an offensive analyst and advisor to head coach Brent Venables at Oklahoma. He spent the three seasons before that as Texas Tech head coach.

K-State will not release its official depth chart until early next week, leading up to the Aug. 31 season opener against Tennessee-Martin, scheduled for 6 p.m. at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. But here is a look at how the two-deep might look.

Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson (5) rushes for one of his five touchdowns in the Wildcats’ come-from-behind victory at Texas Tech last year.
