SEC releases tiebreaker rules for teams vying for spots in conference championship game

Will math be needed in the Southeastern Conference at some point this football season?

For the first time since 1991, the SEC has not separated its football teams into divisions. So instead of the SEC championship game featuring the East Division’s top team and the West Division’s top team, the top two in the 16-team standings will play for the conference crown.

Ideally, the two teams that advance to the SEC championship game will undisputedly have the two best conference records in the league. But what happens if there’s a tie?

On Wednesday, the SEC released the tiebreakers it will use if needed to determine the participants and seeding for its championship game. The tiebreaker rules are as follows:

Head-to-head competition among the tied teams.

Record versus all common conference opponents among the tied teams.

Record against highest-placed common conference opponent in the conference standings, and proceeding through the conference standings among the tied teams.

Cumulative conference winning percentage of all conference opponents among the tied teams.

Capped relative total scoring margin versus all conference opponents among the tied teams.

Random draw of the tied teams.

The SEC championship game will be held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Dec. 7. Georgia and Texas were picked to finish first and second in the SEC preseason poll.
