Tour of Brevard: Cocoa aims to meet, exceed expectation in 2024 football

Having taken over the Cocoa High football juggernaut in 2018, head coach Ryan Schneider has won two state championship trophies, seen players go to major college programs across the country and faced off against some of the top teams in the state.

Yet, he’s still learning. In fact, he learns from his players. Before the preseason win over Satellite on Friday, he sat in a players’ meeting and heard one of his prominent Tigers say that his biggest fear is not proving to be as good as others expect. And the coach identified with that.

“When I lay my head on the pillow at night, that’s my biggest fear,” he said, “of not being the best I can be, letting these kids down and letting this school down and letting the community down. It took a teenager to make me realize I feel the same way.”

Odds are the results on the field won’t let him down in 2024. Cocoa returns with a loaded team. If anything stands between the Tigers and major successes, it is a schedule that includes IMG Academy, fellow state champion Mainland, 4S state runner-up Venice, 4M state runner-up Norland and four other 2023 playoff teams.

That will make for different nights than the Tigers faced in their 71-0 practice game at Satellite.

“I feel like we’re going to be a talented team; I’m not sure we’re a good team yet,” Schneider said. “Tonight was a good first step, but there will be a lot of bumpier roads and a lot of adversity we face. We’ll have to see how we handle those moments.”

The returning stars are all known to college recruiters, including last year’s Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Football, senior Jayvan Boggs, who caught 93 passes for 1,493 yards and 23 touchdowns.
