Brian Daboll looking to create mismatches as play-caller in Giants’ hunt for more explosive plays

After the Giants’ lackluster offensive performance last season – no doubt impacted by instability at the quarterback position – a theme emerged throughout the offseason for Big Blue: Create more explosive plays.

“We’re trying to improve (and) create explosive plays and get the ball down the field,” quarterback Daniel Jones said in June. “Hitting the chances that we get… we’ve got a lot of guys that can make big plays.”

Wide receiver Darius Slayton said in July that head coach Brian Daboll has “definitely come out and made an emphasis [that] we need to make more plays down the field. We need to create more explosives, not just downfield but also catch-and-run scenarios, too.”

Part of that burden of creating will fall on the veteran Slayton and a young receiver corps led by second-year man Jalin Hyatt and this year’s sixth overall selection Malik Nabers making big impacts.

“Experience helps,” Daboll said Thursday about Hyatt, “getting lined up, going to the right spot, playing fast. He’s made a good jump. Now we’ll take that into the season.

“But I’m pleased with all four of those guys. Slay, he’s been very, very consistent since he’s been here. I have a lot of confidence in him. I know the quarterback does as well. And then Nabers is a rookie who’s had a good camp.”

Daboll will have a more hands-on role in helping those receivers as he appears primed to take over play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. The head coach called plays for the first two preseason games and will do so again in Saturday’s preseason finale and said Thursday they are “moving in that direction” for him to do so for Week 1.

The plan in the passing game will be to “try to attack all areas of the field” in the hunt for big plays “to try to make it as tough on [defenses] as you can.”
