Quarterback Trey Feeney leaves UND football program

Aug. 23—GRAND FORKS — The UND football program’s quarterback depth took an unexpected hit this week.

After the Fighting Hawks’ Friday morning practice at Memorial Field, UND head coach Bubba Schweigert confirmed quarterback Trey Feeney has told the coaching staff he intends to transfer.

Feeney didn’t attend Friday’s practice.

“He’s going to look for another opportunity to play college football,” Schweigert said. “We appreciate all the effort he put forth during his time in the program, and we really do wish him all the best in his future.”

Feeney, who played in a No. 2 quarterback role in 2023, was in a three-way battle at fall camp for the No. 1 job this season following the departure of veteran Tommy Schuster, who’s playing his final season at Michigan State.

Earlier this week, UND announced its initial depth chart of 2024 with Simon Romfo named the starting quarterback.

Feeney and Jerry Kaminski were both listed as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart.

Feeney posted to social media Friday afternoon to address the news.

“After much thought, prayer, and consideration, I’ve made the difficult decision to step away from the University of North Dakota football team,” Feeney wrote. “The choice wasn’t easy, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have played alongside so many great teammates. I’ll continue to carry with me the lessons I’ve learned, the friendships I’ve made, and the memories we have created. I fully trust that God is in control and that the Lord has a plan. I’m excited about the next chapter of my journey and looking forward to what the future holds. I will be entering the transfer portal when permitted.”

Romfo played in limited snaps a year ago as a running option, highlighted by a two rushing touchdown performance against Western Illinois.
