The countdown to the official start of the Manny Diaz era at Duke is down to five days.
Diaz, the longtime defensive-minded coach who recently spent two seasons as the defensive coordinator at Penn State, takes over a Duke football program that saw time in the national polls last season under Mike Elko, who left for Texas A&M in the offseason. Prior to his role with the Nittany Lions, Diaz was the head coach for Duke’s ACC foe Miami.
One of the key storylines heading into the Blue Devils’ training camp was who would be Duke’s starting quarterback this season after Riley Leonard transferred to Notre Dame during the offseason. Would it be Henry Belin? Grayson Loftis? Maalik Murphy? All told, Diaz named Murphy, who transferred to Duke over the offseason after two seasons at Texas where he started two games, as the Blue Devils starter on Aug. 19 for Week 1 vs. Elon.
The Blue Devils were picked to finish 11th in the ACC in the conference’s preseason poll.
