Aug. 27—The first week of high school football has come and gone. With it, there is plenty to talk about.
There’s nothing like the talking points that come from the first week of live action after nearly two months of preseason, whether it be high school, college or the NFL. Is some of it overreaction? Absolutely, but the buzz of football finally being back can’t be matched.
While it is way too early to predict how the season is going to go for any team, the first week still gave plenty of insight into what to expect.
So what were the top takeaways for local teams?
Let’s start with what was the biggest and best game from the area on Friday — Hartselle vs. Austin.
The Black Bears overcame a 21-14 deficit in the fourth quarter to win 35-34 in double overtime, giving them their second straight win over Hartselle and a significant win to kick off the season.
Senior quarterback JL Davis was the hero, accounting for all five of Austin’s touchdowns, including three in the final two minutes and overtime. He finished with 195 yards passing and 75 yards rushing not counting sacks. His top target, receiver Jaxon Potter can’t be left out. The senior Murray State commit hauled in eight catches for 119 yards and two touchdowns.
With so many new faces on the team (five returning starters on offense, three on defense), Austin head coach Jeremy Perkins was ecstatic of his team’s ability to come from behind and win on the road.
“We made a lot of mistakes, but the guys kept plugging away, fighting hard and never gave up. We found a way to win, and I feel like we came together as a football team,” Perkins said.
On the other side, even in a loss, Hartselle showed plenty of bright spots in head coach Bert Newton’s first game.
