QB Tommy DeVito appears to make Giants’ initial 53-man roster

Giants head coach Brian Daboll told reporters prior to Tuesday afternoon’s practice that the team is planning on carrying three quarterbacks as part of their original 53-man roster this season.

That means that barring an outside addition over the next few hours, it is expected that local kid Tommy DeVito has made Big Blue’s initial roster.

Despite showing he can be a productive quarterback last year, DeVito was seen as a potential roster casualty heading into this season after the team signed backup Drew Lock to a one-year deal.

With Lock still dealing with a hip injury he suffered during the preseason opener against the Detroit Lions, though, it opened up an opportunity for the youngster to stay on the roster.

DeVito is a local kid who knows the offense very well and is a fan favorite, so it should be expected that he’ll stick around for the majority of the season as the third-string quarterback.

And in that case, he’d likely only see the field if Lock or Daniel Jones were to go down with injuries, as was the case last season.

DeVito slotted in as the starter when both Jones and backup Tyrod Taylor were sidelined and he performed relatively well, going 3-3 while completing 64 percent of his passes and throwing for eight touchdowns.

He played the entirety of this weekend’s preseason finale loss to the Jets and struggled a bit, completing 14-of-27 passes for 103 yards while running for a touchdown and being sacked eight times.
