What Oregon football’s Dan Lanning said about Ducks’ Week 2 game vs. Boise State

The Oregon football team has a win under its belt, albeit an ugly one, and is now focused on its next opponent at Autzen Stadium this Saturday: the Boise State Broncos.

The game is set to kickoff in Eugene at 7 p.m.

Here are some highlights from coach Dan Lanning during his weekly press conference Monday night.

The Ducks uncharacteristically struggled to run the ball and gave up numerous pressures against an undersized FCS line in the Vandals on Saturday.

New quarterback Dillon Gabriel was sacked three times in a single game a year after Bo Nix was sacked five times all season.

That won’t fly for the Ducks looking ahead to this weekend.

“We didn’t play well enough,” Lanning said. “There were some miscommunications we had to clean up. But certainly, room for improvement. They know they didn’t play to the standard we want, and we can be better there.”

A fall camp injury to presumed right guard starter and Indiana transfer Matthew Bedford forced Oregon to change up its offensive line during game week and start walk-on Charlie Pickard at center and move presumed starting center and sophomore Iapani Laloulu to right guard. The other three positions were unchanged, with Josh Conerly Jr. starting at left tackle, Marcus Harper II at left guard, and Ajani Cornelius at right tackle.

Lanning said that the blame can’t solely be cast on Pickard, who he thinks played well given the circumstances on Saturday.

“His communication was pretty good,” Lanning said of Pickard. “We’ll see what it looks like moving forward but I think Charlie handled things really well. Charlie certainly wasn’t the guy that didn’t play well on the offensive line. That’s a unit that has to play well together. It takes all five…
