“That’s our motto for this year,” the fifth-year head coach said.
In their opener, the Hawks showed they practice what their coach preaches as they registered 13 unanswered points in the second half, including the decisive touchdown by senior Jaden Haltiwanger with 21 seconds left in regulation, for a thrilling 13-6 win over Gateway on Thursday afternoon.
“We all work hard in practice every day, we know our plays and we know what we’re supposed to do,” Haltiwanger said. “We kept all of that in our heads and it helped us to push through in that fourth quarter and win this game.”
Dayton added, “That’s perseverance. We never gave up, we trusted each other, we brought passion and we brought effort.”

The Hawks also brought enough big plays to earn the W.
And Haltiwanger provided two of the biggest and most crucial plays in the game’s final minute.
In a contest that looked destined for overtime tied at 6-6, Gateway got a long punt away. Haltiwanger didn’t field the ball in the air, but gobbled it up off a bounce returned it about 40 yards to the Gator 25. Three plays later, he took a double-reverse handoff and scored on a 13-yard run.
