With six sophomores in the starting lineup, North Star football coach Bob Landis expects growing pains to be mixed with the splash plays his youthful Cougars have made through two weeks of the Inter-County Conference schedule.
The bottom line as Landis sees it, North Star will carry a 2-0 record into Friday night’s home game against Somerset County rival Meyersdale Area.
“Good start to the year,” said Landis after his team defeated Juniata Valley and Moshannon Valley. “Definitely a lot of things to improve on. By and large, we’re playing well enough to win football games.
“Glad we’re sitting at 2-0.”

Greater Johnstown junior quarterback Jeremy Updyke completed 6 of 7 passes for 163 yards and three touchdowns, and A.J. Fisher hit both his passes for 114 yards, including a 60-yard TD pass to Kareem Gibson, as the undefeated Trojans beat rival Bishop McCort Catholic 36-7 at Point Stadium in a Saturday night contest.
Red Raiders coach Ryan Donaldson also has seen a combination of positive plays and a few challenges, as his team split the first two games, including Week 2’s 14-13 loss at Glendale and a 34-6 win at Curwensville in Week 1.
“From an offensive standpoint, we just have to be balanced,” Donaldson said.
“Week 1, we were able to throw the ball.
“Week 2, the passing game wasn’t quite as good as it was in Week 1, but we found a little bit of a run game. It’s just about coming out and being balanced on the offensive side.”
This week opens Inter-County South Division play. Four Somerset County programs compete in the division.
The Cougars have defeated the Red Raiders four straight seasons (2020-23), including 2023’s 33-0 shutout at Meyersdale.
