What former 5-star recruit DJ Lagway brings to Florida’s offense

When DJ Lagway committed to Florida in December of 2022, Gator fans were hoping that their quarterback of the future had finally arrived. They also thought it would likely be another year before Lagway saw any real playing time, thanks to the addition of former Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz.

This weekend Florida fans will get a glimpse of that future as the former five-star quarterback will get his first official start in Gainesville against Samford.

Earlier this week, Florida coach Billy Napier said that Lagway would get the start after Mertz was ruled out with a concussion. Mertz went down in the third quarter of Saturday’s 41-17 loss to Miami.Lagway played the final quarter and a half, completing three of his six pass attempts for 31 yards. He also had one interception.

Florida may be reeling, but a solid performance from Lagway against a team the Gators should cruise past would do wonders for the morale of the team and fans alike. Coveted as one of the top overall prospects in the 2024 class, here’s a little bit more on what Florida fans can expect out of Lagway going forward.

A high school career to remember

Lagway has always been regarded as one of the top quarterbacks in the country since he broke onto the scene as a freshman. That season he led Willis (Texas) to a 6-6 record while throwing for 1,579 yards and 17 touchdowns.

The 6-foot-2 signal-called got even better as a junior passing for 2,081 yards and 25 touchdowns in eight games. He completed his passes at a rate of 67% while also rushing for over 500 yards and seven more touchdowns.
