Penn State football to miss another key backup vs. Bowling Green

STATE COLLEGE − For the second-straight week Penn State football will be without a key tight end.

At West Virginia, it was No. 2 man Khalil Dinkins, who had been dealing with an undisclosed injury through preseason camp.

Today, in the home-opener against Bowling Green, it will be his replacement, Andrew Rappleyea. He is listed as “out” on the Big Ten’s weekly availability report. It’s unclear as to why Rappleyea will not play.

While Dinkins is not listed on today’s report, coach James Franklin seemed unsure of his actual playing status earlier in the week as the junior re-acclimates to regular practice sessions.

Both he and Rappleyea back up Tyler Warren, one of the top tight ends in the Big Ten and beyond. Others at the position include true freshman Luke Reynolds, who played last week at West Virginia, redshirt freshman Joey Schlaffer and sophomore Jerry Cross.

Backup linebacker Ta’Mere Robinson also will miss today’s game. He suffered an undisclosed injury last week at WVU. Meanwhile, promising third-string quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer, a true freshman, is listed as “questionable.”

No Penn State starters are listed on the report.

The Lions are nearly a five-touchdown favorite against Bowling Green − a title contender in the Mid-American Conference.
