Coaches Poll top 25: Michigan falls as Tennessee, Utah move into top 10 in college football rankings

USATSI

Notre Dame took a significant tumble and Michigan fell out of the top 10 in the Week 2 Coaches Poll. The  No. 19 Fighting Irish, which ranked No. 7 after Week 1, suffered one of the most significant upsets of the season in a 16-14 home loss against Northern Illinois.

The now-No. 16 Wolverines suffered their worst home loss since 2020 with a 31-12 drubbing at the hands of Texas, which kept its grip on the No. 3 spot in this week’s rankings despite the impressive win. The Longhorns did receive one vote for first place alongside the likes of No. 1 Georgia and No. 2 Ohio State.

No. 9 Tennessee and No. 10 Utah moved into the top 10 to fill the spots vacated by Michigan and Notre Dame after hovering just outside over the last couple of weeks.

In the bottom half of the poll, Iowa and NC State both dropped out after faltering in major nonconference clashes. The Wolfpack lost 52-10 to the Volunteers in Charlotte, which certainly helped lift Tennessee to its new top-10 status. Meanwhile, Iowa State climbed to No. 23 in the rankings after its second Cy-Hawk victory in the last three years.
