5 non-Texas games that impact the Longhorns most

The hope is the Texas Longhorns go undefeated during the regular season and won’t have to worry about things like ‘strength of schedule’ or ‘common opponents’ or poll voters or rankings computers.

But say the Horns do stub their toe against the Georgia Bulldogs in October, or in rivalry games against the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas A&M Aggies. Texas will want and need other games to go their way, be it for a berth in the SEC championship game, college football playoff seeding or even just making the tournament.

Here are five games Longhorns fans should keep an eye on. The right outcome will only help Texas’ path more.

September 21: USC Trojans at Michigan Wolverines

The Longhorns need the Michigan Wolverines to figure things out quickly. It is great Texas thrashed the Wolverines in Ann Arbor, but the better Michigan is, the better the Horns strength of schedule and computer rankings will be.

The fear is, Texas exposed a Michigan team that isn’t very good at all. If you look at Big Blue’s schedule, there could be four games that Michigan is an underdog in. If the Wolverines lose those games, they could finish 7-5. That won’t help Texas.

The first of those games comes in two weeks. Michigan hosts new Big Ten bunkmate USC. The Trojans have looked pretty good through two weeks of the season and Michigan will have a hard time keeping up with Southern Cal…
