Some games are more important than others. A win over Colorado State doesn’t carry the same weight as a win over Michigan at the Big House.

The Texas Longhorns got that big road win on Saturday. Now, the program will reap the rewards. Big games reverberate throughout the season. It is important to be on the winning side of those limelight games. USA TODAY is even wondering if Texas should be ranked No. 1.

When all eyes are on your game, it can change the perception of your program, for better and worse. Big wins can influence a lot of factors important in college football, like optics, reputation, awards and recruiting. Here are five ways Texas’ statement win over the Michigan Wolverines will impact the rest of the season and beyond.

Optics

In many ways, college football is a beauty contest. Less so with the 12 team playoff, but there are still human voters deciding on who gets into the playoff and who doesn’t. The better Texas plays and the better Texas looks, the more likely voters will view Texas favorably. Texas has already moved up in the AP Poll and the ESPN Power Rankings.

Texas winning on the road in front of a tough environment at the Big House is great for the Longhorns optics. Bullying Michigan, winning on offense and defense are good for optics. Texas would have gotten good optics with a close win, but a dominating statement win will do wonders all season. Even Paul Finebaum is coming around on Texas.
