Utah quarterback Cameron Rising is “unlikely” to play in Saturday’s Week 3 game at Utah State due to a finger injury on his throwing hand, according to Brett McMurphy. Rising left a Week 2 win over Baylor just before halftime with the injury and did not return to the game. However, he is on track to return in Week 4 for Utah’s Big 12 opener against Oklahoma State.
Isaac Wilson, the younger brother of former BYU star and No. 2 overall NFL Draft pick Zach Wilson, is expected to start against Utah State in Rising’s place. A true freshman, Wilson entered the Baylor game and completed 4 of 9 passes for 30 yards to help secure a 23-12 win.
Rising’s seventh year of college football was off to a hot start. He’s thrown for 346 yards and seven touchdowns in what amounts to four quarters of play. Five of those touchdowns came in Utah’s season-opening win against Southern Utah.
Rising missed the entire 2023 season while recovering from a severe knee injury. The Utes are a noticeably different team when he’s on the field; Rising is 20-5 as a starter and led the team to a pair of Pac-12 championships.
The Utes are still heavy favorites against Utah State, who will be led by a familiar face in former Utah quarterback Bryson Barnes. Barnes transferred to Utah State in the offseason and threw for 103 yards and one interception in his Aggies starting debut last week against USC.
