Kenny Yoder, a beloved longtime assistant football coach at East Forsyth High School, died Sunday.
Yoder was the special teams coach at East Forsyth and helped the Eagles win state championships in 2018 and 2019.
Current East Forsyth Head Coach Todd Willert said that he and numerous players, especially the kickers, punters and special teams players, had a special bond with Yoder and that his influence went beyond football.
“Kenny was here before I was here and was here over 20-plus years. He was here when Coach (Todd) Shuping left and I came in. Patricia Gainey was the principal then, and she advised me to keep him because of how much the kids liked him,” Willert said. “I was blessed to have Kenny from the previous staff. I had never heard of having a special teams guy and kicking team guy. I never had to worry about the kickers and punters. He was just wonderful at doing it. At the beginning he was just the kicker and punter coach, and he worked with the long snappers. Eventually he and Coach (James) Studevent were the co-special-team coordinators. He was a great guy. Everybody loved him. He was a community coach, and he volunteered his time here.”
All three of Yoder’s sons — Ian, Tyler and Chase — played football at East Forsyth, and Chase was on the 2018 state championship team. Yoder retired from coaching in 2020.
